New local eye safety wear available

Eyesight is invaluable, so these mid-price range safety specs are worth a look. We were sent samples and took them out into the field for a run.

CARVE frames are made from ‘flexible silicone base polycarbonate’. They’re not exactly wrap-around but they do have ‘wings’ that offer a side barrier to foreign objects. The frames sturdy but light and they look good and felt comfortable. There are clear and polarized UV400 lens versions.

CARVE Eyewear is a Sydney company that aims to offer affordable quality sunglasses. Its safety eyewear range has just been launched. There are four styles ranging from $40 to $80. They are designed to meet Australian and New Zealand AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 safety standards, and US ANSI Z87.1+.

Lens options include clear, yellow, rose, grey, iridium and photochromatic to suit different lighting conditions and applications.

Company founder Matt Whyte said the move into safety eyewear was a natural evolution for the Australian-owned brand. ‘CARVE started in 1998 when I was working as a carpenter and kept breaking my sunglasses,’ said Whyte.
