Reece Cavanough, Wood Work Bench (Student Awards 2018)

Construction of the bench began on the November 15, 2017 and finished on the August 16, 2018. The dimensions are 1300 x 600 x 940mm. The woodwork bench has been constructed from Victorian ash. The spanner handles were hand made by me for the project. By drilling holes in to a rod of metal, threading a hole and welding it on to the back of a spanner. The runners and kickers are made out of wood. The hidden dovetail joints for the drawers were cut by hand using traditional tools and techniques. The design of the bench is a culmination of many designs such as the Hobby, Shaker and Roubo workbenches and features from furnishings at house. The bench is ideal for storing many different sizes and shapes of equipment and material. The bench is fitted with a vice, five different sized drawers that have replaceable bottoms. One cupboard and two adjustable shelves; one in the centre of the bench and the other in the cupboard. The vice is adjustable and can be easily changed. And to finish it off the bench was sprayed and hand painted with a clear lacquer. Year 12, Pennant Hills High School. Teacher: Bradford Wilson Photos: Lucas Cterteko
