For my final HSC major work project, I took inspiration from Ronnie Rozenga's whiskey cabinet while contorting the work to my personal design aspects and traditional incoporation while tackling new experiences and diving into the world of marquetry. Drawing from cultural statements of traditional Indonesian rattan weavings, finding a mid century tone with my available timbers, while also incorporating modern hints through brass handles and hinges with the focal point of my major work highlighting the marquetry panel depicting a natural scene of branches and swaying leaves. Facing the project I created the veneers myself at a 3mm thickness and using the double bevel technique and a lot of practice, also incorporating sand shading to give the panel a gradient and add depth. My work intends in its practicality of usage in functional compartment and storage while also highlighting aesthetic features such as the marquetry, inlaid dovetails and geometrical sides and curvature of the legs. Using native timbers for the structural aspects of my build (Tasmanian Oak, Merbau, Meranti Maple), I also used other timbers such as Rosewood and camphor for its grain pattern and natural colour. My major work displays my final HSC year packed with planning, effort, mistakes and a multitude of learning experiences as I tackled this project nervously yet with my best effort to create this whiskey cabinet.
