Dylan Pathirana, Whiskey Cabinet (Student Awards 2018)

I have constructed a whiskey cabinet for my dad's 50th birthday using spotted gum, silver ash, Sydney blue gum, Tasmanian oak and Indian rosewood. My cabinet has mixed the old with the new, featuring many new processes such as dominos, but also traditional joinery such as half-lapped dovetails and mortised hinges. The contrast of the spotted gum and the Sydney blue gum is accentuated by the handmade rosewood handles, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The variety of curved features in the frames, legs and top further complement the project's elegant style. I have constructed the drawers using dovetails at the rear and half lapped dovetails at the front. I have also velveted the inside of the drawers to protect the glasses and add some extra class. A shelf and divider inside the cabinet allows for storage of a multitude of whiskeys. As an addition, I created two coasters out of matching scrap timber to accompany the cabinet. Finally, my project was sprayed with multiple layers of nitrocellulose lacquer and then burnished with burnishing oil to give it an extremely smooth finish. Year 12, Knox Grammar School, NSW.
