Patrick Connell, Utility Table (STUDENT 2021)

Fumed utility table in American oak and recycled English oak with walnut and brass through dowels. Joints include bridle joints and mortise and tenon joints with drawbore dowels and wedged through mortise and tenon joints. This piece was inspired by the Arts and Craft period while gaining some key design cues from a watch, specifically the side profile of the iconic Seiko samurai. The colouration of the timber was achieved through fuming with ammonia in a sealed fuming tent for 12 hours. The pattern on the side rail was a small stamp repeated along a ruled line. I experimented with dyes, burning, handcarving and power carving but the simple stamping into moist timber and then fuming seemed to create the best indentation and colourisation.
