Andrew and Ruth Laing and Morton, Theresa's Bookshelf (CHESTS, CABINETS, SHELVING 2021)

1200 high and 550mm wide, Theresa’s Bookshelf fits neatly into her tween girl’s bedroom. Brief was for a visually light confident piece with stepped spaces for books, curios and larger items. Strong red reclaimed forest redgum contrasts with softer red oak ply. Plywood keeps the construction visually light and allows the interest of scaled cutouts. We worked to make ply practical and robust, stabilising vertical edges with epoxy, recessing shelf ends between redgum legs. Finish is hardwax oil to bring out colours of the timber and resist an occasional spill. Most of the cutting was by router and guide jig.
