The midnight special is a drinks cabinet designed to inspire touch, exploration, and a lifetime of use. Its design was inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese modernism with the hope of achieving a piece with warmth and balance. The tambour doors stretch around the curved cabinet ends with alternating flat and curved hardwood pieces chosen to create a sweeping textural aesthetic. The removal of side and back paneling introduced an opportunity to highlight unique design features; Inlay paneling on the back and interior with figured blackwood and wengi and a removable wood element in the back grooves made to facilitate tambour removal and repair over time. Tasmanian blackwood was chosen as the primary material for its beauty and to express a local palette of material. The bottom frame was designed to be light and linear with subtle curves to soften and mirror the curves of the carcass. The frame construction was weighted with a large apron on the back and top sides for stability and lighter stretchers on the front and bottom to maintain the lean aesthetic. The brass pulls were hand made by the artist. The end product is a minimalist and elegant piece. Material: Blackwood, Wengi, brass
