Rowan Dicks, The Dark Seed (ART, OBJECTS 2022)

An expression of nascent life found in nature. It has always interested me how trees protect their seeds to ensure the survival of their species. The pods in some species seem to be artistic statements of individualism, their fragile beauty contrasting with the mighty trees that grow from them. In this project, I have endeavoured to evoke the intricate geometric lace I have seen in nature. Each curve of the main structure has been steamed and laminated, then hand cut to effect seamless convergence at the tip. Made from American White Ash, finished with a dark walnut stain and clear water-based lacquer.
