A comb-back with bent arm bow stick chair made from Christopher Schwarz book, The Stick Chair Book. This chair has been constructed from locally sourced, wind thrown 140 year old settler planted elm. To be honest before I read Christopher Schwarz book, I didn't know what a stick chair was, but I am glad I discovered them as they are very comfortable. His book gave me the confidence to make this chair & I have discovered a passion for chair making. This chair is fully hand shaped & is constructed using traditional chair making techniques. The arm bow has been steam bent from a single piece of elm & dried on a form until the moisture content is right. The legs & stretchers have been shaped using hand planes, the seat has been shaped using hand tools. The joints used are tapered mortice & tenon joints, fixed with walnut wedges. It is glued using traditional hide glue to allow the chair to be repaired to allow a long service life for the owner, while also sequestering Carbon. The chair has been finished in Osmo PolyX-Oil.
