Martin Burgoyne, Starry, Starry Night (BOWLS, BOXES 2021)

Starry, Starry Night was inspired by contemporary Japanese boxes. Size 460mm x 150mm x 150mm. It is two small chests of drawers sitting on a separate tray. The tray, made from jarrah and walnut, has inlays of lace wood, with ‘stars’ of shell and opal dots. The chests have book matched burr elm veneers with highlights of rosewood and lace wood. A black banding, horizontal on the small chest, and vertical on the larger chest is sprinkled with gold dust stars, and larger 'stars' of shell and opal dots. Once separated the chests can be turned around and placed back on the tray so the five drawers are accessible. The drawers made of lime, have sprinkled gold dust interiors with a continuation of the black band and ‘stars’ theme from the chests. Inside the largest drawer are three small boxes. They are also made from lime with gold sprinkled interiors, and a continuation of the burr elm, black band and ‘stars’ theme. The ‘star’ theme continues to the drawer knobs which are cabochon stud earrings with a miniature ‘picture’ of Vincent van Gogh’s famous 1889 painting, ‘The Starry Night’. Van Gogh’s life inspired Don McLean’s song ‘Vincent’, often erroneously titled after its opening refrain, ‘Starry Starry Night’.
