Damon Rentos, Spartan flower vase (BOWLS, BOXES 2021)

After making a wall mirror with a 300 Spartans theme (see photo 5) a couple of years ago, I decided to make a glass flower vase 'holder' with a similar theme to go with it. It is essentially 2 open end boxes with one fitting over the other with the glass vase inside. It is mostly enhanced with decorative elements inspired by ancient spartan pottery . This decoration takes the form of piercing of the outer box turned from Huon Pine to expose the inner box turned from New Guinea rosewood. Copper is then used to add to this using a jewellers saw and some basic acid etching. The 'lid' which is used to help position single flowers is removable when a larger number of stems are used. It has a cat motif and an epoxy resin ring. Not a spartan theme but I do have a tendency to do as my wife asks !
