David Vize, Something old, something new (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )

After a one year delay, the wedding was due to go ahead in a few months. My fiancee happened to mention that the table near the entry door was not wide enough and was a bit too deep for the space. As a result of this passing comment and when time allowed, build time during the months before the wedding was spent making this tall, wide, shallow piece. A camphor laurel slab was taken from its designated storage place, leaning next to the door, and was sacrificed for the task. Given it was quite thick, a slice was also removed from the top to make a more or less bookmatched (waterfall matched?) set of thick drawer front veneers. Once she discovered I was making something for the wedding, the number of visits to the shed for a tool, or to discuss something urgent such as tomorrows weather suddenly increased leading to a few demands that she exit the area. Tapered legs, drawer frames etc of Victorian Ash with drawer sides made from something old: her old and much loved table that was well past its prime. A few coats of Kunos oil from Livos, with some 600 grit and a buffing pad strapped to a slow power sander have brought it to a silky smooth finish. Secretly delivered to the reception and hidden cleverly under a tablecloth where it was used to support other gifts, all was revealed on the night to the great pleasure of my now wife. The piece now sits where it was designed to be, holding cat brushes and car keys along with a current display of some cherished items.
