Side Table By Samuel Stockham This is a solid timber side table made of red mahogany and white tulip. It was constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. All the material was milled to thickness and panels were glued up. The inlay on the tabletop was done by routing out the waste and chiselling the corners square. Then gluing and clamping the white tulip strips in. With the tight mitres on the inlays, it gave the appearance that the timber was bending at right angles on itself and is one continuous piece. A slot mortiser was used to remove most of the waste in the leg mortises and then chiselled square. I also used a combination of a trim router and Forstner bits to create the other mortises in the table. Each one with its own challenges and grain orientation and set-up required. I added curves to the side panels and legs to make the piece a bit more elegant, as the flowing look makes it easier for the eyes and makes it appear lighter as it isn't bulky or blocky. A drawer was added to give the piece some more functionality instead of just being an aesthetically pleasing piece but it actually has a purpose greater than looks now. Everything got sanded to 240g with power and hand sanding and edge profiles were added. Finally, 3 coats of timber bench top oil were buffed into the surface to achieve a high, lustrous sheen.
