This piece was created as my response to the Beyond Ordinary exhibition. What does it mean to be a Contemporary Woman Maker? It explores the journey of finding a place as a maker in a male driven industry: dichotomies such as light/dark, Masculine/feminine, power tools/hand tools, uniform /random, 2 dimensional/3 dimensional, ordinary/extraordinary. I was inspired by nature and geometry and the sculpture is an experiment with light, form and perspective. It explores the satisfying uniformity that can be achieved with machines, combined with a complex yet deliberate randomness that is pleasing to the eye from all angles. The goal was to create a dynamic wall-mounted art work, as well as a surface to display treasured objects. The owner may choose to leave the shelf empty or carefully select an object to display. Southern mountain ash was chosen to be worked in a variety of techniques, including bent lamination, joinery of curved surfaces, steam bending and ebonising. Each component is assembled in a complicated layering of geometrical relationships that play with light and shadow.
