ROSSBY is inspired by Rossby waves, also known as planetary waves, which naturally occur in rotating fluids. Within the Earth’s ocean and atmosphere, these huge, undulating waves form as a result of the rotation of the planet. This piece is a unique, once off creation, designed to be interpreted differently in the eye of each beholder. Five pieces of American Walnut timber were hand-dressed, glued and clamped to form one solid slab and cut to shape with a mitred edge. The wave like pattern is hand carved to complement the natural grain of the wood, then repeatedly carved, sanded and buffed over hours to achieve a smooth, polished finish.
