The piece titled 'Rinato,' meaning 'reborn,' symbolises my personal journey into furniture design and craftsmanship. Recently, my wife and I relocated from Australia to Scotland to pursue her career, a move that served as a catalyst for my career transition into furniture making after working in law for a decade. This new chapter prompted me to embrace a creative path, channeling my experiences and environment into my work. The piece is crafted from figured eucalyptus veneer, chosen to pay homage to my previous home in Australia, reflecting its natural beauty and connection. Its form draws inspiration from the iconic bridges of Glasgow, my new home, capturing their architectural elegance and structural strength. The bridges symbolise connection and transition, mirroring my own journey of transformation and adaptation. Through this work, I aim to merge personal history with cultural influences, creating a dialogue between my past and present. The intricate veneer showcases craftsmanship and detail, emphasising the beauty in natural materials, while the overall form reflects the architectural harmony of the city’s bridges. 'Rinato' embodies not only my rebirth into furniture design but also the blending of two worlds—my homeland and my new environment—highlighting the themes of change, connection, and resilience. This piece is a reflection of my evolving identity as a designer, inspired by the landscapes, structures, and experiences that have shaped my journey, ultimately celebrating the transformative power of embracing new beginnings.
