The Ribbon Chair is approx. 54”H x 30”L x 30”W x 18”H seat height. The ribbons themselves are formed, each with 6 layers of 1/8” birch flex ply, laminated, using a twisting form process producing the ability to achieve compound curves with acute radii; ribbons have a painted finish over a gesso base. Chair seat is traditionally constructed with an 8/4” figured maple inset and an African mahogany frame with spline joinery. Dowel joinery mates seat to ribbons. The ribbon chair reflects a blend of unpredictability and non-linearity inspired by my view of nature. Conceived from the idea that functionality is born from a ritual process of creating structure from the energy contained within chaos; And that the energy in nature, when it takes a form, can be seen as beauty. The random unpredictabilty of floating ribbons settling upon an inert platform creating, seamingly out of nothingness, a new structure and concept of ‘chair’. This ritual mating of form and function also creates an invitingly playful and thought provoking environment, welcoming one to participate in the festival of ribbons. “One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” — Henry Miller
