This Kauri jewellery box was made as a gift for somebody - it’s made from the dwindling remnants of a recovered Kauri log that I procured locally on the Coromandel Peninsula some years ago, in the aftermath of stormy weather. I’ve used offcuts of Banksia for the bases and trim, offcuts of swamp Rimu for the tray handles to offer a contrast, and the lid handle is hand carved from a small piece of Ebony that was given to me 12 years ago by my woodwork tutor John Shaw. Merino felt is used for the lining and the ring cushion base is made from repurposed open cell foam from random packing materials. Joinery is splined mitres and the finish is Danish Oil.
