This Pennsylvania spice box combines walnut burl on the drawer fronts with birdseye maple veneer on the door fronts and drawer bottoms, each sheet laid by hand with hammer and hot hide glue in the traditional manner. The doors carry a compass-drawn inlay, cut entirely with hand tools, echoing the geometry of 18th-century ornament. Beyond its façade, the box conceals a removable back panel that reveals a hidden compartment, continuing the spice box tradition of secrecy. Finished with shellac, the piece balances walnut’s depth with maple’s luminous figure.
