Description: Entrance Table Name: Moonchild Concept: To create an aesthetic entryway table that will have an impact on its own or with a large oval hanging mirror. • Strong, simple and functional design • Using curves similar to early French design • Use negative spaces • Contrasting woods to create strong horizontal lines Wood Used: American Black Walnut Sycamore Techniques used: • Scale modelling: Drawing full scale plans • Milling: Jointing, planing and table sawing to create clean faced symmetrical timber • Marking of pieces on Milled timber: Selecting timber that is suitable for the purpose, noting the end grains radial pattern and length grains imperfections, to limit wood movement, structural failure and machining issues while maximising aesthetics. • Lamination: Selected timber is thicknessed to same size. Joints are hand planned, jointed with biscuits and glued using clamps • Shaping timber: Create templates using bandsaw and spokeshave. Band sawing excess away from pattern leaving only 1-2mm to be removed on the router table. Due to the curvatures involved, pieces needed to be routed from different directions because of grain issues. The router was also used to create the bevels on the horizontal levels. • Joinery: The structural Walnut horizontal member joints to the back legs are mortise and tenons created by hand saw and chisels. The legs joinery from leg to level is a halving joint. Dowels are used to joint the leg tops and structural horizontal to the shelves. • Cock beading: Created by hand planing and sanding with recesses chiseled. Fitted before assembling. • Pre Assembly Finishing: Pre-finishing any visible areas that won’t be accessible once assembled, while protecting the gluing surfaces with taped to ensure a good bond • Assembly: Stage 1: Dowelling & Gluing drawer Carcass to shelf. Stage 2: Dowelling & Gluing top mid- shelf to Stage 1. Stage 3: Attach the front legs. Stage 4: Dowel & Attach top shelf. • Finishing: Level legs & hand sand. Finished with Osmo natural and Osmo white for the shelves (pre-finished) Images: Photography by Daniel Allen from Nelson, New Zealand
