The ‘Lotus’ incense holder is a new sculptural collaboration between Sajith Jayaweera and Mark Lilly. The idea for the piece came about from an encounter with a vintage floor-standing ashtray. With smoking indoors becoming less acceptable over the years, this seemingly outdated typology presents an opportunity to craft a new narrative centred around themes of wellness and ceremony. The design of the piece uses a simple carving technique to evoke the form of a dried Lotus pod, a symbolic association in many cultures with purity and enlightenment. The top section is detachable so it can be used in a traditional table top manner, as well as for the cleaning of ash.
