terry appleby, Lisa (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )

Lisa was designed and built for the 2021 Design Fringe exhibition exploring the theme of "home". The piece, a tribute to my late mother, is a mid-century-inspired dressing table and chair with a touch of modern technology. The timbers used are predominantly American Rock Maple and Otways Myrtle for their striking contrast, Ebony for the wedges and drawer handles, and Vic Ash drawers. There are three mirrors used, the main being surrounded by dimmable LEDs covered with Japanese Awagami Kinwashi paper, the lights being controlled by a remote in one of the drawers. The door fronts are book-matched slices of Myrtle burl, set in epoxy. The drawer fronts are a continuous piece of figured Myrtle The design relies heavily on joinery, with hardware only used for the brass soss hinges and door catches. The bulk of the construction is done with dovetails and mortise and tenon joints. Finished with Rubio Monocoat.
