The shape of the lidded box with finial was decided by the laminations I had left over from the Hot Air Balloon project. The laminations were too attractive to be left unused. I added a jarrah base and banksia top to the laminations to form a box. I decided that the shape I had would not be appropriate to have a small foot. I must admit that I had three separate goes at making the legs to hold up the box, as they had to be complementary to the shape with no flat spots and be practical and stand up. I did not want to make the legs too bulky as they would detract from the box. I had to leave enough wood so the stainless steel pins would hold. So you can see why the embossed spine on the sheoak legs have a practical and showy look. I really believe lidded boxes deserve good finials. I love Cindy Drozda finials but everyone makes them so I have gone down my own path and made carved ones which are three dimensional and elegant. Made from ten woods: banksia, jacaranda, jarrah, marri, pecan, rosewood, sheoak, wandoo, woody pear, red cedar. The finial is made from jamwood. The box with finial is 270mm high by 160mm wide.
