Kumi Sofa Named after the Japanese word "kumi" to assemble, to join. The Kumi Sofa is a piece that grew out of a desire to create something simple, functional, and lasting. Made from solid Tasmanian oak, I chose this timber for its warmth and character. Each piece is hand finished to bring out the natural grain, allowing the wood to tell its own story. I wanted the design to feel grounded and relaxed, inspired by the low-sitting furniture traditions of Japan. The sofa is built to sit close to the floor, encouraging a sense of calm and presence. The clean lines and minimalist form are a nod to the balance of function and simplicity, while the exposed joinery reflects the craftsmanship behind every connection. The back of the sofa acts as an open shelf, designed to be seen and used, whether for holding books, records, or plants. It’s part of my ongoing exploration into furniture that does more than just sit there—it offers practical, everyday solutions, without losing its aesthetic value. For me, ease of assembly was an important consideration. Using sliding joints and threaded inserts, I made sure it could be put together easily, even in smaller spaces or apartments where accessibility matters. It’s an alternative to flat-pack furniture, easy to assemble, but with real craftsmanship and a focus on longevity. The sliding joins are a take on the traditional cross lap join, with an additional rebate that houses the material so there’s minimal movement and twist. The upholstery is inspired by vintage textiles, chosen for its texture and warmth. The cushions are flexible, allowing you to move them around depending on how you want to use the sofa, whether it’s for lounging, sitting upright, or even turning it into a daybed for guests. The Kumi Sofa is a piece that’s meant to be used, not just admired. It’s built to fit into your life, offering comfort, versatility, and a quiet presence. For me, it’s more than just a sofa, it’s a reflection of the care and thought that went into making something that will last, both in design and in function.
