This mah jong table is made from coachwood, birch ply and leather. It has a supplementary top which alllows it to be used as a utility table when games are not in progress. The supplementary top utilises frame and panel construction to reduce its weight and allow easy removal and storage. The drawers are for holding chips and are set to the left extremity of each rail in order that a player can withdraw chips without moving the chair. I have tried to capture the diversity of coachwood grain characterisics by using relatively straight grained boards for all except the panels and drawer fronts which are quite highly figured I remember watching mah jong players in Hong Kong many years ago. The tables were often of quite elaborate design, in particular the legs which featured intricate curves in a chinese style. With the legs of this table I hoped to remember some of the traditional designs but to have the table sit more comfortably in a more contemporary Australian setting.
