The tabletops are solid 30mm jarrah. Dowels were used extensively, particularly to secure the thin jarrah spacers between the drawers and some of the bracing at the base. The legs of the cabinets are projected through the tops as exposed tenons for visual appeal. Internally, jarrah strips are glued to all exposed end surfaces of the birch ply used for the drawers and other parts of the cabinet. Finger joints are used to join the front panels of the drawers, with mitred lock joints used at the back. To cover the exposed ends of the drawer front ply, thin strips of jarrah were glued the ply before it was routered into the fingers, thus giving a jarrah/birch checkerboard look to the drawer sides. Round chromed handles are used to compliment the chrome steel bedframe in the bedroom and the cabinets were sprayed with an oil-based polyurethane, providing a subdued ‘amber’ tone and robust protection.
