James Prell, Hybrid Night Heron (Student Awards 2017)

Hybrid Night Heron Sea Kayak. 17/10/2016 – 9/8/2017. Marine plywood. Western red cedar, rock maple, American walnut, aluminium fibreglass. 5500mm long, 504mm wide and 382mm tall My HSC major project is a single manned sea kayak call The Hybrid Night Heron. To construct the hull, I used a stitch and glue method to join the four hull panels together. The hull panels were stitched together at the joins with copper wire and also stitched to five external forms to form the shape of the hull. The joins were then glued with thickened epoxy and the stitches removed. The deck is made from strips of timber that run the length of the boat. Each strip has a bead and a cove routered onto them to fit them together well. James Prell, Year 12, The King's School. Teacher: Jayden Taccori. Photos: James Prell, David Prell
