Having a father who made gliders and boats, I had an early introduction to laminating timber. In high school, we made a 3.6 m catamaran with 1.6 mm spruce ply—layering 10 cm strips over a mould, stapling that layer on, then following with a second glued-on layer. Great fun! This 600 x 500mm 'Heart Shadow Box' construction is quite different. Using hoop pine ply—still at 1.6 mm and 3 mm—I made male and female moulds for the left and right sections. Clamping the inner and outer moulds together with ply in between has the benefit of leaving no clamp marks. I'm fairly happy with the final result and intend to enhance the next iteration by bringing in the impression of movement. Everyone needs a heart!
