This table was made to fit into a hallway adjacent to the front door in a house which is light filled and airy. The legs and rails are of Tasmanian blackwood and the top is recycled kauri. The dowels are jarrah. I have used curved laminations on a number of occasions over the years but have often found that while they achieved the structural objective of the design they did not fully integrate into the piece from an aesthetic perspective. With this table I hoped to achieve a more organic appearance. For example the curved component of the leg would emerge from the vertical element as a branch would emerge from the trunk of a tree rather than be simply attached to it. Similarly the top of the curved component expands in a manner reminiscent of a lotus flower which is then sliced to receive the rail.
