This piece came about whilst trying to work out how best to use a narrow, blackbutt slab off cut, that was barely bigger than it’s finished size, and too good to cut up because of its figure. The legs and shelf are also blackbutt, which was salvaged from a firewood pile, and thought to be ‘probably jarrah’. The through dowels for the shelf were made from what little offcuts were left. The piece features a number of natural defects, owing to the nature of the weathered, reclaimed material, which have been left as is for the most part, celebrating where it came from, and avoiding excessive waste. The design has been kept minimal and uncomplicated, in an effort to best showcase the figure and features of the timber used, in a refined and subtle form. It is simply finished with an all natural tung and citrus oil blend, retaining the feel and character of the timber.
