Macauly Hampton, Grandfather Clock (Student Awards 2019)

The Grandfather Clock is a modern take on a historical design, employing both old and new construction processes and techniques to create a sophisticated, stylised and functional item of furniture. The intent of the project was to design and produce a working Grandfather Clock that would stand the test of time and ultimately become a family heirloom to be enjoyed by others for many generations. The case is made entirely from the sustainably sourced, native Australian hardwood, West Australian jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and features a Hermle triple chime, cable driven clock movement, an ornately finished clock face and 30mm bevelled edge glass to match. (Note: the glass was not yet installed in photographs). Designed to be a static item of furniture, the Grandfather Clock's construction began in April 2019, and was completed November 2019. The project boasts many joint types, such as dowel, mitre, rebate, plate, domino and door moulding techniques. The overall dimensions of the project are 2220mm tall by 525mm wide by 325mm deep.
