My project is a coffee table inspired by the traditional Japanese woodworking technique of Kumiko, where small timber pieces are joined to form intricate geometric patterns. I was drawn to this style and wanted to reinterpret it in my own way. Instead of using empty space within the design, I explored the idea of reversing the concept by using timber itself to create the pattern. I carefully constructed a series of triangular elements, which I then set into black epoxy resin. This created a striking contrast, especially when framed in Jarrah. To further enhance the design, I combined Jarrah with Tasmanian Oak, two native timbers chosen for both their visual qualities and local significance. The result is a coffee table that showcases a blend of traditional influence and modern reinterpretation. It reflects my creativity, respect for woodworking traditions, and my interest in experimenting with materials to make a design uniquely mine. I am proud of the finished piece and grateful for the opportunity to bring this idea to life.
