Kumiko is a centuries-old Japanese woodworking technique, developed over 600 years ago, and is still widely used today in crafting doors, room dividers, and wall hangings. Traditionally, Kumiko patterns depict motifs such as cherry blossoms, hemp leaves, and other nature-inspired designs, including dragon claws and flowers. However, Farout! departs from these traditional forms by featuring a unique outer space scene—far removed from the geometric shapes and landscapes commonly associated with Japanese Kumiko. This panel depicts the Sun, stars (including the Southern Cross), the blue planet, a shooting star and a spectacular asteroid shower. The three-piece star in the centre of each triangle is the signature asa-no-ha pattern, a floral motif that has been used for centuries and remains one of the most popular designs today. The Sun is crafted using the Kawari yaae-zakura kikko pattern, a striking and intricate design. Measuring 60 x 100 cm, this piece is made from Jelutong, Australian cedar, and Huon pine, with a cedar frame. The shooting star is made with rare pink ivory. Remarkably, it consists of over 3,000 pieces, all carefully interlocked without the use of glue or nails—except for the perimeter.
