This laminated Ash occasional bench is the most time-consuming and technically challenging piece of fine furniture I’ve produced in my career so far. It involved an evolutionary design process. The endless construction of moulds, jigs, and formers tested me as a maker and designer. Eden was inspired by my connection to Aotearoa as an international student. I pictured its flowing curvature and stark boldness nestled into the native bush of New Zealand, my own Garden of Eden. I believe that the strength of the curves, the welcoming cradle of the framework and the sleek seat design perfectly encapsulate the vast majority of my design identity. Eden represents my desire to travel overseas and pursue my dreams as a fine woodworker, a designer and a maker. A dream that, thanks to the support of my Whanau and friends, I have achieved.
