This hall stand blends sculptural form with fine woodworking, centred on a 700 mm helical curve that creates a sense of movement and elegance. Crafted from shop-sawn blackwood veneers laminated to the precise arc, the form celebrates both technical mastery and natural beauty. Blackwood’s warm golden-brown tones and subtle figure contrast with the bold, smoky patterns of highly figured black sassafras, creating a striking visual harmony. A key feature is the finger jointed vertical panel, set at the same angle as the helix. This precision joinery acts as both a structural element and a sculptural statement, with the repeating joint lines echoing the layered rhythm of the laminated curve. Inspired by organic spirals found in nature — fern fronds, seashells, and vine twists, DNA — the design merges natural geometry with refined craftsmanship. The combination of contrasting timbers and complex forms bridges tradition and contemporary design. Functionally, the hall stand fits seamlessly into entry spaces, offering a welcoming focal point. Its sweeping lines guide the eye and hand, making the piece as engaging to use as it is to admire. The helix holds a standard (700c wheel size) bicycle also.
