Rocking Chair by Samuel Stockham This is a solid red mahogany and blackbutt rocking chair. It has been power carved using an Arbotec grinder and a variety of shaping and sanding attachments. I utilised a CNC router in order to cut all the pieces, 100 in total. Using the CNC gave me repeatability, reliability and accuracy. The pieces were glued together using Titebond III and reinforced with stainless steel decking screws. This created a laminate chair with roughly the right shape and curves to suit ergonomic proportions I then smoothed out all the transitions refining the shape and rounding components. I had to keep making adjustments to ensure the components were as symmetrical as possible and to achieve a high-quality finish. The chair was designed to be as comfortable as possible. There was a long process of sanding by hand using a variety of different attachments, which included a soft contour pad for large curves and a hard surface sanding disc for rough material removal and a long reach contour sander for the tight curves. Then hours of hand sanding up through the grits till I reached 240g. Then Six coats of timber bench top oil were buffed into the surface to achieve a high, lustrous sheen.
