250 x 250 x 150 This box is something of a change in style and proportions to most of the boxes I make - except for the dowel hinge that I almost always employ. It is also a change for somebody who does a lot of detail design before embarking on making something. In this instance the starting point was for a square box body in clear Sassafras with the lid in a four way book match of Black Heart Sassafras veneer. Shining Gum and Ebony would be used for the trim and centre piece. After that I was not sure where the piece would lead me! It quickly became clear that the lid pattern demanded that the inside tray reflect its diagonal lines and the base also left me with no choice but to follow. I also do not normally like changing the colour of timber by staining but for balance the base needed to match the dark colour of the ebony in the lid. However I also felt that the use of so much ebony, much of which is not normally seen, would be wasteful. So in this instance I decided to stain the base. Another decision where the piece told me what it wanted to do and I'm glad I listened.
