The design of this piece started with the timber a beautiful beefwood log and a couple of small slabs of coastal banksia. These species are closely related and have a similar ray pattern yet are very different tones and complement each other quite nicely. The unit needed to hold and showcase a record collection, have a well ventilated area for the amps and sit the record player on top. It incorporates exposed hand cut joinery, steam bent beefwood and sliding dovetails to connect the top while holding it flat and allowing wood movement in what is a typically unstable species. I built the accompanying speakers with a 3mm beefwood veneer plans and electrical components from The speaker project to complement the unit.
