Atom is a chair best understood as a diagram of building construction, the expression of which draws inspiration from the De Stijl movement. The aim was to use construction principles, such as sheer walls, load transfer, and moment resistance to create a chair composed of parts that join in surprising and playful ways - without compromising strength. The chair’s squareness, then, allows it to extend into a longer bench seat if more of it were made with adjustments to the arm rest. Therefore the singular chair exists as “an atom” of a larger piece of furniture.
