Upcoming Woodcraft Show provides community link
The Cooroora Woodworkers Club will host their Annual Woodcraft Show on Friday 10th October, 8.30am to 4pm and Saturday 11th October, 8.30am to 3pm, in the historic Memorial Hall in Maple Street, Cooroy.
”The club was founded in 1988 and located on the present site of the Cooroy Sawmill in 2009”, said John Esson, President Cooroora Woodworkers Club. “The annual woodcraft show is the club’s most important event linking it to the woodworking community, both young and not so young, through to the wider community visiting over the two days of the show. We are hugely privileged to be based in Cooroy in such a historical location with such wonderful facilities.”
“Our Annual Woodcraft Show is the perfect opportunity to see the amazing things that can be made from wood by our members and various exhibitors from the surrounding area as well as the hotly contested Interclub and school competitions”, said club member Martyn Sawyer. “The Woodcraft Show encourages everyone to show their talents, skills, and the joy of woodworking to the community. Visitors are always delighted by the beauty of natural wood, especially when it has been hand-crafted into an attractive and functional object.”
“As a complete beginner with limited skill I joined the club with a little trepidation!”, said Martyn. “I have been welcomed into the club with open arms and given the opportunity to learn from supremely talented and generous members through basic woodworking, turning and table making courses. There is always someone in the workshops to give advice and guidance on techniques and safety. I have made stools, turned bowls and even made an Asian inspired table during these courses. I love the feeling of the place!”
The Woodcraft Show also includes an exhibition which features entries in a well sponsored competition. Examples of general woodworking, woodturning, carving, marquetry, toy-making, pyrography, scrollsaw/Intarsia, and furniture may be seen. Prizes are on offer to the winning entries, generously donated by various businesses in Cooroy and surrounding areas.
Show activities include demonstrations throughout both days of woodturning, scroll sawing, carving, and other woodworking crafts. Club members are on hand to answer questions and provide woodworking advice.
Visitors can also see and purchase wood slabs of several species of trees previously milled off site by the club's milling team. Numerous stalls, both commercial and member operated will also exhibit.
All proceeds from a raffle and other activities go directly back into the club to continue to provide an enjoyable hands-on activity for club members, some of whom have never worked with wood before.
