The Great Fire of London in 1666 was disastrous in the extent of its destruction, however for craftspeople of that age it presented as an opportunity for the many reconstructive works it necessitated.
Born of English parents, but raised in the Netherlands during that country's 'golden age' of art, Gibbons was schooled in sculpture before he returned to England. His innovations in terms of technique, subject and timber choice were revolutionary. Despite his incredible creations however, his career was deemed a failure, yet his work has survived floods, fires and fashion for later generations to marvel at and enjoy.
