A survey exhibition of highly respected artist and academic Prof Helmut Lueckenhausen opens at The Warrnambool Art Gallery in Victoria on April 12 and will run until June 11. ‘The Memory Palace’ includes work from Lueckenhausen’s practice dating from the 70s.

The exhibition has been curated by John Cunningham, Director of The Warrnambool Art Galley. The survey will include Lueckenhausen’s early works in which he explored the realisation of his ideas/designs while ‘learning about working with wood as I was going along – and making lots of mistakes’. The exhibition also includes later works contributed to, in varying degrees, by subcontractors and collaborators. As well as work drawn from private and public collections, the exhibition will also include four new works, three in the House Teraphim series.

The title of the exhibition refers to an ancient Greek strategy for aiding memory in long discourses, recalled by Edward Hollis in his book of the same name, in which he discusses the significance of ‘lost interiors’ or lived-in spaces and the memories they contain.

The gallery will host weekly floor talks by John Cunningham and one by Helmut Lueckenhausen on May 16 at 2pm.

The Warrnambool Art Gallery is situated at 25 Liebig Street, Warrnambool, Vic.
