Sturt launches artist talks series for 2027
In 1962, Winifred West established the Sturt Weekend as an annual event on the first weekend of October. She described it as an occasion “for the reunion of friends of Sturt”. To honour this tradition, more than 150 visitors came together at Sturt on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026 for a weekend of connection, creativity and community.
The weekend was made possible through funds raised through Friends of Sturt membership, together with generous support from Friends of Sturt volunteers. The weekend also launched the first of a new series of 'Meet the Maker' events which will take place in 2027.
As the first in the series, weaving artist Monique van Nieuwland gave an in-depth talk about her extensive career, including her fascinating textile work for the film industry. Monique also spoke candidly about balancing a career as a working artist with raising children. The talk offered a personal and detailed insight into her creative process and materials, as well as the opportunities that exist around the world for professional makers.
In 2027, Meet the Maker artist talks will explore the stories, materials and creative processes behind the work of makers connected to Sturt.
