Black sassafras, Crushgrind ceramic mechanism

390mm, diameter 70–55mm

I chose the Tasmanian black sassafras at the Perth Wood Show. The uniquely grained wood showed plenty of contrast and colour; it also was enjoyable to work with as the soft timber carved easily on the lathe.

The project itself was part of an in-school assessment; this meant I had plenty of time to refine the piece and get it to a high quality finish. I chose the matte lacquer finish so as to let the beautifully grained wood show its true character and speak for itself. This project familiarised me with the processes involved in attaining a high quality finish.
