One company has taken up the banner for those trying to make ends meet while training on apprentice wages.

“In the current climate, the cost of living is a challenge for everyone, but apprentices can feel it particularly hard while earning apprentice wages and also trying to build up the tools they need for their trade,” says Melbourne jeweller Kosta Theochari. “We also know there are many mature-age apprentices balancing an apprenticeship with mortgages, families and other financial commitments.”

While raising awareness, this family-owned and run business has decided to offer meaningful support. Their MDT DESIGN Australian Apprentice Tool Grant will offer $3,000 towards tools and equipment for their trade. Any trade.

“Having both started our own careers as apprentices, my father and I understand the sacrifices involved and how important the right tools can be when you're learning your trade. We felt the grant was a practical way to give something back, add a little positivity and hopefully give one apprentice a helping hand to get ahead.”

How to apply

Kosta and his father have tried to keep it simple: “You need to tell us your best apprenticeship story in 100 words or less – serious, funny, inspiring or unexpected – we want to hear your story. It could be something you built, made, fixed or created. A mistake you have learnt from and will never make again. Something your mentor taught you. A difficult job you finally figured out on your own. Or simply a moment from your apprenticeship you’ll never forget.”

“Ultimately, we'd love to see the recipient use the $3,000 to buy tools that make a genuine difference to their apprenticeship and that they may continue using throughout their career.”
