AWR Contributing Editor Richard Vaughan is hosting two special weekend workshops by visiting international wood artists Kevin Rodel (USA) and Graeme Priddle* (NZ). Both workshops will take place at Richard’s workshop in Sumner Park, Brisbane.
Kevin Rodel is currently teaching a 12 week course at Sturt School for Wood in Mittagong, NSW, however on September 26–28, 2014 he will will share his furniture making expertise, focusing in particular on the router-based technique of making and using inlay templates. He will also demonstrate his half lap grid system (see images below), and show how to cut a sliding tapered dovetail. Surfacing techniques such as bleaching, ebonising and wire brushing will also be covered.
A few weeks later, October 17–19, Graeme Priddle will demonstrate some of the surfacing techniques which is renowned for.
For makers of furniture, and small boxes, surface treatments tend to focus on which finish to use, however Graeme will show how hand and power tools can be used for incising and carving patterns and textures before finishes are applied. The use of pyrography, milk and acrylic paints will also be covered.
This workshop has been designed to be relevant for furniture makers as well as woodturners. Turners will need to bring bowls and/or platters to practise on as Richard’s workshop won’t be set up for turning during the weekend.
The workshop format for both Kevin Rodel and Graeme Priddle will be a Friday night slide show from 6–9pm along with drinks and nibbles. Saturday and Sunday from 9.30 to 5 will be a mix of demonstration and practice covering as many techniques as will fit in the time.
The workshop fee of $475 for each weekend includes materials. Food will also be supplied.
Class sizes are limited to ten people, booking is essential. Don't miss this opportunity to be inspired and expand your repertoire of decorative techniques.
