Ready to Teach – Woodwork is a new book that explores a side of woodworking rarely spoken about in detail: how to teach it well.

After more than thirty years teaching beginners through my Woodwork for Women workshops, I came to see that strong teaching is not only about technical knowledge, projects, or machinery. Much of what helps people learn happens in the less visible spaces: how a person is welcomed, how confidence is built, how fear is eased, how instructions are paced, how safety is held without intimidation, and how a teacher reads the room in real time.

The book grew from that lived experience. Over the years I noticed that many highly capable woodworkers wanted to teach, but often had little guidance on the human side of it. Others were already teaching, yet relying only on the methods they themselves had received. I wanted to create a practical and thoughtful guide for those who feel drawn to pass skills on, whether in woodworking, community workshops, sheds, schools, or small private settings.

While woodworking is the vehicle, the book reaches beyond woodworking alone. It speaks to teaching craft skills in a broader sense, with a focus on clarity, presence, atmosphere, and helping beginners feel capable.

Structured in a warm and accessible style, Ready to Teach – Woodwork covers topics such as:

  • preparing yourself to teach
  • finding your own teaching voice
  • creating a strong welcome and setting the tone early
  • teaching safety without fear
  • building confidence around tools and machinery
  • understanding student emotions, nerves, and self-doubt
  • pacing lessons so people can absorb and succeed
  • managing group dynamics and workshop flow
  • practical teaching strategies for live classes
  • the hidden knowledge beginners are rarely told
  • setting up workshops, businesses, or community teaching models

The book also invites reflection, helping readers consider not just what they teach, but how they teach, and how people feel in their care. My hope is that it supports a new generation of practical teachers who combine sound skills with kindness, clarity, and respect.

Ready to Teach – Woodwork has recently launched in Australia and is available in print from my website www.woodworkforwomen.com.au. The ebook will be available by May.
