Spotted gum, English elm, recycled hardwood, recycled pine (possibly hoop), plywood
3300 x 1300 x 1300mm
The horse drawn vehicle that I have made is similar to the original ‘Sydney Sulky’. I started with some original steel parts, springs an axle and wheel centre boxes, and built it up from that.
English elm was used for the hubs, sourced from a neighbour’s property, chosen for its interlocking grain. Spotted gum used for spokes and shafts. Recycled timber used for fellies and seat.
Traditional tools used include bell pointer, hollow auger, tyre roller and blacksmiths forge.
Lost skills involved wheelwrighting, blacksmithing and coach building. Steam bending was used for shafts and mudguards .Traditional colour is Brunswick green.
