Many of Australia’s most internationally renowned wood designers, makers and artists will showcase their works in a rare group exhibition at Bungendore Wood Works Gallery from September 13 until November 20, 2014.
Home with Wood features work by more than 20 acclaimed designers, all accredited members of Studio Woodworkers Australia, such as David Upfill-Brown, Tony Kenway, Neil Erasmus, David Emery and Will Matthysen.
Professor Lyndon Anderson, Dean Faculty Arts & Design, Canberra University, will open the exhibition, which also commemorates the opening of Bungendore Wood Works Gallery, more than 30 years ago by designer and maker David Mac Laren. The gallery was specifically built to showcase, and exhibit world class wood sculpture, art and furniture by Australian designers.
Phoebe Everill, president of Studio Woodworkers Australia, said in a world of throw away, mass produced furniture and replica design, Home with Wood acquaints audiences, to new concepts in original wood design, sustainability and function.
‘Many of the makers and designers exhibiting are internationally acclaimed for their design ideas, and skills in producing significant one-off works and commissions. Home for Wood will showcase affordable, original pieces which will appeal to home-owners who love cutting edge design, and appreciate the values of quality handmade items.’
David Mac Laren said the exhibition illustrates ways today’s furniture is designed to be eco-friendly, relevant and highly desirable to fit contemporary living.
‘As designer-makers, our first challenges are to find ways to stay relevant, connect with clients and make a living from our passion.’
