Who would have thought that the humble crate could have become a style in its own right? Yet pallet furniture is now a ‘genre’, so attuned have some become to recycling. If you don’t believe this, just try googling pallet furniture – here’s a sample at this link

It is a good thing to make use of this once largely discarded resource, however it is possible to recycle the wood, not just reconfigure the pallet!

The July 31 deadline for Create From a Crate 2016 is coming up very soon so why not consider entering? $7000 in cash prizes are on offer and your work could be part of an exhibition in Melbourne that will also travel to a regional gallery.

Create From a Crate is a competition run by Victorian company Waste Converters and the Victorian Woodworkers Association. Since its inception in 2003, CFAC has instigated the creation of fine furniture, sculpture, artworks and even musical instruments from recycled crate timbers.

The pallets supplied originate from the USA, and include some of the following timber species: American white and red oak, sycamore, maple, cherry, ash and elm. The brief is to create ‘functional or artistic objects’. You can include other material in your piece, so long as you ‘showcase the recycled pallet timber’.

There is an entry fee, and most entrants will collect their own pallets from Waste Converters, however interstate entrants can email Ward Petherbridge to enquire about the possibility of freight being subsidized interstate (if a minimum of 5 entrants is reached).

Entries close July 31, 2015

Pieces are to be delivered to the Walker Street Gallery on February 1, 2016.
